When discussing electronic locks and access control, you will frequently hear two terms: fail-safe and fail-secure. Understanding the difference is the first step in specifying the right hardware.


Fail-Secure: If the power goes out, the door or gate remains locked. This is great for an IT server room, a bank vault or prisons where security cannot be compromised, even during a blackout.

Fail-Safe: If the power goes out, the lock releases, allowing the door or gate to open freely.

 

When it comes to  pedestrian turnstiles placed in escape routes, Fail-Safe is non-negotiable. In the event of a total power failure or a severe emergency, people must be able to push through the gates without needing a key,a card, a fingerprint, or the help of a security guard.


How Different Turnstiles Handle the "Fail-Safe" Requirement?

Not all turnstiles clear the path in the same way. Depending on the type of barrier you choose for your facility, the emergency escape mechanism will look a bit different. Let's look at how the main types of turnstiles handle a crisis.

1. Full automatic security turnstiles (Optical Turnstiles, Speed Gates, Swing Barrier, Sliding Gates)

Speed gates are the preferred choice for modern European office buildings due to their elegant glass panels and fast throughput. But what happens during a fire?


When a fail-safe speed gate loses power, the electromagnetic locks holding the glass panels in place disengage. This allows fleeing pedestrian to simply push the glass panels open in the direction of the exit with minimal physical effort. The panels will then keep open, leaving a wide, unobstructed lane.

When linked to the building's emergency system, the motors drive the panels into the open position and hold them there before the main power drops, ensuring passing free for the evacuating crowd. What's more, Bolan Security also can set the full automatic turnstiles open the barriers when powered off for emergency. After the emergency finished, the barriers will close automatically when powered on, don’t need people to close it manually. These modes are optional as you required.

2. Tripod Turnstiles: The Drop-Arm Feature

Tripod turnstiles are rugged, cost-effective, and highly reliable, making them popular for factory entrances and public transport hubs. However, pushing past a rigid stainless-steel arm during a panic is dangerous.


To solve this, modern tripod turnstiles are engineered with a Drop-Arm mechanism. Inside the turnstile head is an electromagnet holding the top arm in a horizontal position. The moment power is cut, the magnet releases, and gravity simply drops the arm down against the cabinet. This instantly converts the restricted lane into an open walkway, preventing crowd crush and ensuring rapid evacuation. Once the emergency is resolved and power is restored, the arm is usually reset manually by a guard.

3. Full-Height Turnstiles

Because full-height turnstiles look like revolving metal cages, they present a unique challenge for fire safety. They are usually placed at the outer perimeter of a facility rather than internal fire escape routes. However, if they must be used on an escape path, they are designed to unlock and allow "free rotation" in the exit direction when power is lost. Many also feature a manual mechanical override key for emergency responders.

Beyond Power Loss: Active Fire Alarm Integration

A common misconception is that fail-safe turnstiles only open when the electricity goes out. But in most fire scenarios, the building still has power. Waiting for the fire to burn through the electrical cables is not an evacuation strategy.

This is why fire alarm integration is the most critical feature of your access control setup.

The logic board inside the turnstile must be directly connected to the building's main fire alarm control panel or Building Management System (BMS). This is typically done using a simple, highly reliable dry contact relay.

 

Here is how the sequence works:

  • A smoke detector triggers the building's fire alarm.
  • The fire alarm control panel sends an immediate signal via the dry contact to the turnstile's main controller.
  • The turnstile controller instantly overrides all normal access rules (ignoring card readers or biometric scanners).
  • The turnstile executes its emergency protocol: speed gates swing open and lock into the open position, or tripod arms drop automatically.
  • The gates remain open until the fire panel sends an "all-clear" reset signal.

Local fire inspectors in countries like Germany, France, and the UK, the USA will rigorously test this specific dry-contact integration before signing off on a building's safety certificate. If the turnstile does not respond instantly to the fire panel, the building will not open.
